LEFTFIELD DAY
Hosted by Colin Roberts
The Leftfield Stage is for those who are looking for something a little more challenging. Music fans and obsessives rub shoulders here with a bill presented by renowned tastemaker Colin Roberts. Glitched up beats ride into off-kilter singer-songwriters and indie-rock that's more than just indie-rock. The stage is held together by one simple thing - great music.

65 Days of Static are perhaps the only band around to make Muse sound comparatively restrained. Utilising post rock and math rock (music with peculiar time-signatures), the Sheffield quartet's mostly instrumental music combines barrages of guitar with electronica, glitches, violins, live and sampled drums and presumably anything else they can find lying around.
The spectre of prog rock is never far away, especially on the bafflingly titled Music Is Music Are Kisses Is Everything, a twiddly-twiddly horror presumably best savoured surrounded by dancing elves in tights-The Guardian

Emmy The Great has some strange friends if her claim to writing songs about them is to be believed. Certainly, London's latest (and, dare I say it, greatest) anti-folk troubadour has led a colourful life thus far, moving from Hong Kong to London and ending up as a rollerskating waitress in one of the capital's most eclectic bars. . Sounding like the illegitimate lovechild of Regina Spektor and Bob Dylan, her songs offer a window into an intriguing world where celebrating the life of a deceased friend by sprinkling champagne on his grave is acceptable behaviour and cutting your hair to be like Patti Smith is the done thing. Let's face it, Emmy The Average just doesn't sound as good, does it? Drowned in sound

Who are Komakino anyway? Komakino are a 5 piece, unsigned, indie band from
Derby who have been receiving exciting reviews for their energetic live
performances. The band have been compared to Joy Division (from where the name
'Komakino' originated), The Cooper Temple Clause, Idlewild, Buzzcocks, Black

www.myspace.com/thesilentparadeuk

Performance
Out the window, the new Manchester got closer and closer to us. We watched as the reflective architecture, the penthouses and the sickly bars, began to surround us. We have played our instruments and we have made young sounds. There is fun in the north of England. Creativity in Manchester. These years contained numerous addictions and illnesses.. We had sex with each other too much. That might be unfair. (We are) Performance. We believe in pop and in spectacle. We don’t really. Joe Stretch wrote a novel, it’s getting published next year. Laura publishes a sexually hostile fanzine called Too Much Information. Joe Cross is Manchester’s greatest re-mixer, re-working fellow Mancunians The Whip, The KBC, Daggers. Fun is for others. (We are) Performance. We write catchy songs about depression. We are shit at enjoyment but nevertheless we encourage you to dance

Nic Dawson Kelly
Born in a tangerine just outside of Seville, Nic Dawson Kelly was brought up with colour and intrigue. His family, local three-legged race and egg spoon champions, made life a constant battle for awareness in all the phyical conundrums. He built his first guitar aged 10 and never looked back to Spanish shore...deciding it was better to hide in the shadows of the big smoke. After putting words into mouths, and faces onto maniquins he was to wed an ancester of Florence Nightingale...and while his hours away peacefully writing three dimensional poems on the swing violinists and the fallen grapefruit of his youth.

Cats and Cats and Cats
No one noticed that outside under a tree sat a girl, with no hair and strange eyes. She sang about a ship that sailed to the other side of the sea where the sand and grass were everywhere. They covered up the buildings and swallowed the people, who didn't mind at all. She imagines she sits outside a sunken church with a boy who sings a song about the little clouds that sometimes cry bits of rain on them. The smallest cloud of all is called Bo and she can travel faster than the big sleepy clouds who sometimes get angry with her and strike lighting. So the girl and boy have to hide in the sand until the sleepy clouds forget about it and go back home

BANDS

HEADLINE TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY
Vincent Vincent and The Villains
“I adore rock ‘n’ roll music,” explains Vincent, the twenty-something who fronts this excellent band. “I want to be a songwriter who brings something new to the table. I want everyone to hear what we do.”
As you’ll know if you’ve heard it, it’s quite unlike anything else around. A tall guy with a big voice, Vincent makes rock ‘n’ roll songs with meaning and heart. Whether he’s writing about overcoming personal demons (I’m Alive), about his own band’s occasionally troubled past history (Johnny Two Bands), or pulling off a classic Bo Diddley-style bit of grandstanding (on Pretty Little Girl), this is a songwriter with a sense of humour, and a great eye for detail. Born out of the conviction that a live band – however sincere their music – should make an effort to engage with an audience, this is a band on a mission to entertain. For them, it’s a serious business

Kid Harpoon and The Powers That Be
Having toured alone in support of Tilly and the Wall, Mystery Jets, Larrikin Love, Jamie T, Fields & more, 2006 is his year to step up. Signing to XL Recordings, and forming his band 'The Powers That Be', expect Kid Harpoon to bring fear, excitement and joy like no 'folk' singer you've ever seen. Living above Nambucca, London's indie mecca venue, Kid Harpoon has spent the last year honing some 200 songs deep into the night. Having toured extensively in the autumn of last year Kid Harpoon holed up for the winter months putting together a band to accompany his unique acoustic sound. And like Liam Frost achieved last year by adding The Slowdown Family to his solo act, Kid Harpoon has emerged with a sound that should deliver his name onto the stage that it deserves. Whilst retaining the rawness, passion and sing a long nature of his solo set The Powers That Be bring a polished, rock edge that adds to the style of his existing material and helps deliver new songs that could not be achieved without their help. There is a fairytale feel to many of Kid Harpoons songs. His sound evokes recollections of childhood tales of pirates, medieval courts hosting grand banquets and cartoon chase scenes. On ‘Riverside’ the vocals range from a barking growl to a high falsetto and back with ease. The addition of the band is really felt here as they highlight “that there is darkness and there is light” within the song. They are used to illuminate each chapter of this tale. The use of the band also allows Harps to reveal a new song to his set in ‘Death Of A Rose’ which he plays on keyboard but manages to keep the jaunty theatre of his earlier work.
Gigwise. gave his debut track ‘Riverside’ 4 stars and placed it at number 44 in our top 50 singles of 2006; we have always been full of praise in reviews of his live shows and tipped him as one to watch in 2007

The More Assured. ' " jingly jangly indie pop tunes thatll make you want to grab the person nearest to you and dance round the room." (Wink)

FRANK TURNER
I used to be in Million Dead you know... It was a lot of fun for four years, and then we broke up, which was a real shame. In the aftermath of years of touring in a hardcore band, ears still ringing, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at the lighter end of my music taste for a while, and follow up my love of all things folk / acoustic / country. And maybe along the way show that it is possible to write simple acoustic music without sounding like james blunt, and whilst retaining some passion, anger, and a sense of humour.
www.myspace.com/frankturner

OX.EAGLE.LION.MAN
Fresh from the ashes of Les Incompetents comes the 8 legged multi-faceted phoenix of dance crazed, ska-laden punk pop. There's no business like unfinished business: Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man is not a band born of design, but born of necessity. A band that know there is no 'dream' to be lived, they understand that it will be long and hard to escape the labyrinth of excess and cliche that London and its musicians has become.
The members of this band are here because all their friends wanted to write songs about being young and free and getting drunk and having sex, whereas they wanted to tackle the bigger, darker and all in all more relevant issues. Whether it be life or death, genius or insanity, time and space or even history and mathematics, OELM will cover any subject that interests them as long as it isn't one the many that has been hacked to death by nearly forty years of popular music.
So Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man. are an independent creation, void of fashion and trends and oozing identity, singularity and style.

Captain Black –
Captain Black spent a year or so recording in schools, bedrooms and barns in the fields of Hampshire before they felt set to take their tales of love, loss, prostitution, brutal murder and heart broken swines to London. All the stories are set to a blend of Folk, Punk, Country and Skiffle beats and you can hear their sound all over the city.

All five members live together in a cosy little house in Camden Town where they continue to write songs and break noise regulations. www.myspace.com/captainblack

The Harrisons
While everyone is buzzing around the Arctic Monkeys they are but school kids who have hit the limelight in all respects. While they too sing about how gritty Sheffield is (it isn't all that bad, I promise you) I scarcely believe they've seen even half of what their lyrics conjure up, despite how close to the truth some of them are. The Harrisons however are out there, living on the music alone (none of the members have jobs outside of the band I believe). There's the true grit of Sheffield, but they are but a rare example of it.
The latest single Blue Note is more of the same we were treated to with their debut single "Wishing Well". It is a song about wanting to go back and face the past, but at the same time trying to endeavour forwards with angst and mild regret of things past.

Ciara Haidar is a girl who likes to play the piano and sing songs. She also loves London, her piano, colourful language, going to bed, not going to bed, Shostakovich, getting ridiculously dressed up, looking up new words in the dictionary, Woody Allen, spinach, Beirut, George Orwell, her brother's Manga t-shirt, Sid and Nancy, wanker Shoreditch dandies whom she relentlessly rips the piss out of but secretly can't get enough of unless they are in fact just wankers, Marlon Brando in 'A Streetcar Named Desire', that TV interview Grace Jones did when she started slapping that guy…
This is a lady pouring with a combination of warmth and cutting wit. She has a vocal which is tender yet carries an intimidating quality of experience, something you could call old fashioned charm.
"Ciara Haidar wouldn't go amiss in the Burlesque halls of the golden era, but thankfully she hasn't applied her talent to the recent passing fad and instead writes fantastically well observed music about 'Shoreditch Dandy's' and the like." NME
