| The Band Agency's record label TBA Records are proud to be named Independent Content Providers for Seattle-based Shared Media Licensing Inc., the developers of 'Weed' - the digital music download system that embraces P2P file sharing. TBA will be releasing Jetson's debut single "Social Hand Grenades" using the Weed system on April 5. Weed is revolutionary new software that encourages file sharing whilst protecting artist rights. Artists always earn 50% of the sale of each song. Weed allows you to download a track and play it three times for free on your computer. After that you are asked to purchase it or the track will no longer play. "Weed has solved the problem of Internet file sharing, and a brilliant solution it is, as it not only permits unlimited file sharing, it actually encourages it, and everyone gets paid - even the people sharing the files! More and more of the people I work with are putting their own CDs out, and they're jumping on this idea." says music producer Jack Endino. (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Therapy) This new platform suits TBA's DIY remit, exposing and developing new bands in the new music community. TBA is currently expanding its tour network, which TBA gig swaps and tours bands across the UK, backed up with education, media exposure, label releases and actively interacts artists with music industry professionals. The extra twist is that if you buy all 3 tracks in the form of Weed files, you can claim a free Jetson CD at any gig on the UK tour, details here soon. Give your Weed away "Whereas Itunes and Napster don't want you to file-share the songs that you buy off them, Weed wants you to share as many songs as you purchase with as many people as possible." Seattle 24x7 Weed allocates a percentage of the sale of every digital musical track to a new breed of online distributor-- a financial incentive for their patronage rather than a threat of lawsuits and criminalization. This payment system rewards both the artists and the file sharer. Specifically, the artist always receives 50% of each sale, and the rest goes to those who helped distribute the file. You get 20%, the person who shared the file with you gets 10%, and the person who shared the file with that person gets 5% of the sale price. Weed receives the final 15% for service and software maintenance costs. Once you purchase a Weed file, you can burn the file to CD and play it on any stereo system, or transfer it to a portable device like the Creative Labs Nomad, the Rio S10, or any current Windows CE PDA. Weed is set to change the way music is sold online with fair rates for artists, rewards for sharers, and encouragement of new artists and labels. John Beezer of SML will appear on a panel at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas next week to introduce this further to the music industry.
